To find out daily water use you have to read the water meter. Note down the meter reading between regular intervals. By subtracting the latest meter reading from one before, you will get water use in kilolitres in those days.

To find how many kilolitres you use each day, you have to find the number of days and divide the number of kilolitres by the number of days.

A water meter shows you how much water you use and based on your usage you have to pay water bill. If you have following type of water meter then read as follows:

Read the numbers left to right. The black number show how may kiloliters(1000 Liters) have been used. The red numbers show how may liters have been used. Only the kiloliters are shown on your bill.


PictureWater Meter-2
If your water meter look like as water meter-2 then the number show the kiloliters while the dial show the liters. The dials are read from right to left. When a pointer is between two numbers read the lower number. This meter also has a gauge that shows flow through the meter. If you turn off all your taps and there is movement in this gauge you may have a leak.

You may have seen the water below or behind your washing machine. The washing machine is designed to store the water and used that water to wash the clothes. To check the washing machine leak, you have to first check hoses behind your washing machine and make sure it tightened properly.

Look and feel the above portion of the water supply line. If the soil is wet at these locations this might indicate a leak. In this case, the water will seep up towards the ground surface, usually directly above the path of the underground pipe.

There are sometimes leaks in water supply pipelines that is in between the house and meter. It is too difficult to detect underground pipeline leaks because the pipes are buried at least 3 feet below the ground surface. It may happen that the leaking water will travel along the pipe, back to the meter.
